Joe is a registered patent attorney and the founding member of Tessari Patent Law Group, pllc. He has over twenty-three years of experience as an intellectual
property lawyer and is deeply experienced in all aspects of intellectual property
law. Joe began his career as an associate at the intellectual property boutique firm of
Paul & Paul in Philadelphia. During his six years at the firm, Joe gained extensive
experience in patent preparation and prosecution as well as trademark and
copyright practice, and litigation experience at the district court and appellate levels.
In 1991, Joe joined the intellectual property group in the law department at E.I du
Pont de Nemours & Company in Wilmington, Delaware. At various points in his
tenure at DuPont, Joe served as lead counsel for the Haskell Laboratory of
Toxicology & Industrial Medicine, served on the DuPont bioscience safety
committee, served as lead counsel for the DuPont Qualicon® business, served as
lead counsel to the superconducting films business, managed the transgenic
animal licensing program and the chiral catalyst licensing program, and served as
lead intellectual property counsel for the DuPont Performance Coatings business
unit, where he supervised five other patent professionals (attorneys and agents) in
Wilmington, Delaware and Wuppertal, Germany.
Joe left DuPont in 2001 to become Intellectual Property Counsel for Tyco
Technology Resources in Wilmington, Delaware. In that capacity, Joe provided
strategic counseling and legal support for several operating divisions of Tyco
Electronics, headquartered in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
In 2004, Joe became the Director of Intellectual Property and Senior Patent
Counsel at Tredegar Corporation in Richmond, Virginia. At Tredegar, Joe oversaw
the entire intellectual property portfolio of, and provided strategic counsel to,
Tredegar Film Products Corporation and The William L. Bonnell Company, both
operating subsidiaries of Tredegar. In his tenure at Tredegar, Joe developed
policies, procedures and an infrastructure for effective management of the
intellectual property assets, resulting in a 40% reduction in spending on outside
counsel fees.
Prior to founding Tessari Patent Law Group, pllc, Joe was a partner in the Intellectual
Property Practice Group of Troutman Sanders, LLP in Richmond, Virginia. Joe
joined Troutman in January 2007 as the first patent attorney in the firm located
outside of its Atlanta office and help to develop a robust patent practice in
Richmond to complement the existing trademark and IP litigation expertise at
Troutman Sanders.
Throughout his career, Joe has accumulated experience in a diverse array of
technologies, including fasteners; locks; latches; polymerase chain reaction;
aqueous ink jet inks; photographic emulsions, fixers and developers; electrostatic
toners; phosphorescent materials; polymers; dispersions; superconducting
materials; chiral catalysts; dyes; photomasks, photoinitiators, and other
photosensitive materials; microbial diagnostic processes and devices; potassium
titanyl phosphates (blue lasers); oncogenics; transgenics; nanotechnology;
packaging apparatus; electrical connectors and housings; active and passive
electronic components; radar sensors; patch panels; stamping apparatus;
pick-and-place apparatus; circuit board manufacture; antennas; disposable
absorbent articles for personal care and hygiene; design and manufacture of films,
laminates and composite webs; and numerous manufacturing processes and
apparatus. In addition, Joe has experience in developing in-house IP management
processes and procedures, such as processes for invention disclosure, invention
evaluation, infringement detection, product clearance, filing strategies and
protection of confidential information and trade secrets. He also has extensive
experience in transactional matters concerning intellectual property rights, such as
purchase and sale transactions, assignments, licenses, intellectual property audits,
and due diligence reviews. Joe has conducted reviews and authored opinions
regarding patentability, infringement and validity matters and has participated in
litigation at the trial and appellate levels on trade secret misappropriation and
related intellectual property matters.
